American Buddha and Bird

Acrylic on Indian Canvas

92.5/92.5 cm

The Buddha sits in the Nevada desert with a magical bird on an ancient rock. The desert speaks of life and death, of bleached bone and skeletal truth. The rock of geological time and the bird of animated life. The red, white, and blue symbolise history's current season. What would our world's largest empire learn from humanity's greatest stage?

Minotaur King feared for his brutish, raw physical prowess and his animal cunning, the mythical Minotaur of antiquity has been painted here as a golden monarch, a creature of refinement and civilisation against a backdrop of regal blues. He has been transformed from brutish to civilised, and his masculine power is harnessed to societal good.

Humanity's ability to corporate and develop mutually beneficial relationships has been crucial to our success as a species. This painting is about the power of fellowship: the physically indomitable Minotaur of Greek mythology befriends the agile, adaptable mouse. Their strength in the alliance is formidable because of a balancing of contrasting energies and newfound expansion of possibility.

Revelations speak about revealed sacred insight. A man looks heavenwards, feeling out with one hand the veil of his reality that inhibits his perception. Another looks in anguish to a cross-legged meditating figure for answers, but he has none. All search for truth, but only the still sage to the bottom left is open to enlightenment. In his peaceful state, a magpie gently rests on his hand, symbolising unity with non-human life. Above, celestial orbs and stars emerge from the deep blue darkness as the sage awakens with his eyes closed.

Forefathers portray pre-sedentary humanity before agricultural settlement paved the way for organised civilisation. Male initiation and the transfer of intergenerational knowledge in this painting include the teaching of vital survival skills, such as hunting and fishing, cyclical seasonality, and the sacralisation of the environment. The painting depicts wise elders, younger men being exposed to this knowledge, a land mammal and fish skeleton, symbolising our primordial place in the cosmos.
